The Reset Manual

From dissonance to resonance

27 modules · 151 lessons. Each practice explains what it is, how people do it, the amounts studied (only where research gives them), cautions, and who should check with a doctor first.

Module 00 · foundations

Start here: Homeostasis, from dissonance to resonance

1What 'resetting your frequency' means here: homeostasis, a metaphor not a medical claim🟢 Established

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

On this site, 'resetting your frequency' is a metaphor for homeostasis: the body's constant work to keep temperature, blood sugar, pH, heart rhythm and mood in a healthy range. 'Dissonance' means strain on those systems (stress, poor sleep, ultra-processed food, isolation). 'Resonance' means the conditions that let them settle.

How people practice it

Pick one small daily practice from each part of this manual (food, rhythm, breath, emotion, spirit) instead of chasing a single fix. Notice how you feel and keep a short journal.

Cautions

This is a framework for healthy habits. It isn't a diagnosis and it isn't a claim about any disease.

Check with your doctor first

Anyone with a chronic condition, pregnancy, or on prescription medication should share any planned change with their clinician.

2Your body's real rhythms: heartbeat, breath, gut waves, brain waves, circadian clock🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Your body really does run on rhythms you can measure: a heartbeat that speeds up and slows down with each breath (heart-rate variability), stomach 'slow waves' at about 3 per minute, brain-wave bands that shift with sleep and alertness, and a 24-hour circadian clock.

How people practice it

Use these real rhythms as your 'frequency' practices: slow breathing (heart), regular meal times (gut), a steady sleep and wake time (circadian), and calm attention (brain waves).

Typical amounts / times studied

Stomach slow waves are about 3 cycles/min (🟢 FQ-GASTRIC). Resonance breathing is about 6 breaths/min, ≈0.1 Hz (🟢 FQ-HEART).

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

3How to read our evidence labels (🟢🟡🔴🔵)🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Every claim on this site carries a label: 🟢 Established science, 🟡 Emerging / preliminary, 🔴 Traditional or teacher's claim (not supported by controlled studies), 🔵 Faith & spiritual teaching.

How people practice it

Before you adopt any practice, check its badge. Build your routine mostly from 🟢, try 🟡 with curiosity, treat 🔴 as tradition or ritual only, and hold 🔵 as faith.

Cautions

A 🔴 label doesn't always mean harmful. It means you shouldn't expect it to do what's claimed.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

4Working with your doctor: complementary, never instead🟢 Established🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Everything here is complementary: it's meant to sit alongside licensed medical care, never to replace it.

How people practice it

Bring this manual to your appointments. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every supplement, herb and device you use. Ask: 'Is this safe with my medications and conditions?'

Cautions

Never stop, delay or change a prescribed treatment because of something you read here.

Check with your doctor first

Everyone, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, have cancer, heart, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, a mental-health condition, or take blood thinners or antidepressants.

5Body, mind & spirit: 'as he thinketh' and the mind-body evidence🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

'As he thinketh in his heart, so is he' (Proverbs 23:7). Research shows the mind and body are linked: chronic stress is associated with faster telomere shortening (🟢 ST-EPEL), and emotions show up in hormones and immunity.

How people practice it

Pair a body practice with a mind or spirit practice each day: for example, a walk with a gratitude prayer, or a meal eaten slowly with thanks.

Cautions

Thoughts influence physiology, but 'positive thinking' isn't a treatment, and illness is never a moral failure.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

Module 01 · nutrition

Dr. William Li's 5 health defense systems

1Overview of the 5 defenses & Li's books🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Dr. William Li's framework (Eat to Beat Disease, 2019) groups the body's protective systems into five 'health defenses': angiogenesis (blood-vessel balance), regeneration (stem cells), the microbiome, DNA protection, and immunity. He links specific foods to each one.

How people practice it

Build each day's plate so it touches all five defenses: a colorful plant, a fermented or fiber food, a polyphenol drink (tea or coffee), and healthy fats.

Typical amounts / times studied

Li's 'food doses' are amounts seen in observational studies (🟡 LI-W1). Treat them as 'amounts studied', not prescriptions.

Cautions

Many food–defense links come from lab, animal or observational studies (🟡). The five systems are real biology, but how much a single food moves them is unproven.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

2Angiogenesis: tomatoes, soy, green tea, berries🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Angiogenesis is the body's control of blood-vessel growth. Li highlights foods with compounds (lycopene, catechins, soy isoflavones, berry polyphenols) that affect it in lab studies.

How people practice it

Cooked tomatoes with olive oil, green tea, berries, and whole soy foods (tofu, tempeh, edamame) as part of normal meals.

Typical amounts / times studied

Tea and tomato data are observational or from animals (🟡 LI-S1–S3). The soy cohort (🟡 LI-S4) helped reassure breast-cancer survivors that soy foods are safe to eat.

Cautions

Never treat these foods as cancer treatment.

Check with your doctor first

Anyone with a hormone-sensitive condition can talk with their oncologist about soy. Food amounts are generally fine.

3Regeneration: cocoa flavanols, pomegranate/urolithin, fasting🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Regeneration refers to the body's stem-cell repair systems. Li points to cocoa flavanols, pomegranate/walnut ellagitannins (which gut bacteria turn into urolithin A) and periods of fasting.

How people practice it

A square of 70%+ dark chocolate or unsweetened cocoa, pomegranate or walnuts, and an overnight fasting window.

Typical amounts / times studied

The flavanol trial used high-flavanol cocoa twice daily in 16 people (🟡 LI-S5).

Cautions

Chocolate adds sugar and calories, and some products contain heavy metals.

Check with your doctor first

People with diabetes or on glucose-lowering drugs should check before fasting.

4Microbiome: fermented foods, fiber, avocado, kiwi🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Your gut microbiome is the trillions of microbes that help digest fiber, train immunity and talk to the brain.

How people practice it

Daily fermented foods (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi), plus plenty of fiber: beans, whole grains, vegetables, avocado, kiwi.

Typical amounts / times studied

In the Stanford trial, people worked up to about 6 servings/day of fermented foods over 10 weeks, which increased microbiome diversity (🟡 LI-S10). Fiber of 25–29 g/day was associated with the greatest benefit (🟢 ST-FIBER).

Cautions

Increase fiber slowly to limit gas, and drink water.

Check with your doctor first

People with IBD, SIBO, or who are immunocompromised should check about fermented and unpasteurized foods.

5DNA protection: coffee, kiwi, lifestyle & telomeres🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

DNA protection means the body's systems for repairing everyday DNA damage and keeping telomeres healthy.

How people practice it

Kiwi, coffee in moderation, and a whole-lifestyle approach (plant-forward diet, movement, stress practice, connection), like the Ornish pilot study (🟡 LI-S14).

Typical amounts / times studied

Small coffee trials used about 500 mL/day of a dark roast (🟡 LI-S13).

Cautions

Caffeine can affect sleep, anxiety and heart rhythm.

Check with your doctor first

People in pregnancy, or with arrhythmias, anxiety or reflux, should moderate caffeine.

6Immunity: mushrooms, broccoli sprouts, garlic, Mediterranean pattern🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Your immune defenses include innate and adaptive immunity. Li highlights mushrooms, broccoli sprouts, garlic and the Mediterranean pattern.

How people practice it

Cook shiitake or other culinary mushrooms several times a week, add broccoli sprouts to salads, and use garlic and extra-virgin olive oil.

Typical amounts / times studied

The shiitake trial used 5–10 g/day of whole mushrooms for 4 weeks (🟡 LI-S15).

Cautions

Raw sprouts carry a food-poisoning risk.

Check with your doctor first

Pregnant, elderly or immunocompromised people should avoid raw sprouts.

7Li's 'Eat to Beat Your Diet': metabolism-friendly eating🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

In Eat to Beat Your Diet (2023), Li focuses on metabolism and healthy fat. The best-supported parts are a Mediterranean pattern and cutting ultra-processed foods.

How people practice it

Base meals on vegetables, legumes, fish, nuts and olive oil. Cook at home more often.

Typical amounts / times studied

PREDIMED used about 1 liter/week of extra-virgin olive oil per household, or 30 g/day of nuts (🟢 ST-PREDIMED).

Check with your doctor first

Anyone on GLP-1 or diabetes medication should coordinate dietary changes with their care team.

Module 02 · nutrition

Eating for resonance: daily nutrition foundations

1Plants first: fiber and whole foods🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Plants first: whole, minimally processed plant foods supply the fiber, polyphenols and micronutrients most strongly linked to a long, healthy life.

How people practice it

Fill half your plate with vegetables and fruit, a quarter with whole grains or legumes, and a quarter with protein.

Typical amounts / times studied

Large meta-analyses found the greatest benefit at 25–29 g/day of fiber (🟢 ST-FIBER).

Cautions

Some people with kidney disease must limit potassium.

Check with your doctor first

People with kidney disease or IBD should get personalized advice.

2Eat the rainbow: polyphenols, berries, greens, spices🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

'Eat the rainbow': different plant colors carry different polyphenols (anthocyanins in berries, carotenoids in orange foods, nitrates and folate in greens, curcumin in turmeric).

How people practice it

Aim for 3 or more colors at each meal. Have a daily handful of berries and a serving of leafy greens.

Typical amounts / times studied

In the cohort, about 1 serving/day of leafy greens was associated with slower cognitive decline (🟡 ST-GREENS).

Cautions

Curcumin supplements can interact with blood thinners and have been linked to rare liver injury (🟡 ST-CURC).

Check with your doctor first

People taking blood thinners, or with gallbladder disease, should check before taking curcumin supplements.

3Healthy fats & the Mediterranean pattern🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

The Mediterranean pattern (olive oil, nuts, fish, legumes, vegetables, modest wine optional) has the strongest randomized evidence of any eating pattern for heart health (🟢 ST-PREDIMED).

How people practice it

Use extra-virgin olive oil as your main fat, have a handful of nuts, eat fish twice a week, and have legumes several times a week.

Typical amounts / times studied

PREDIMED amounts: about 4 tbsp/day of EVOO, or 30 g/day of mixed nuts.

Cautions

Nut allergies.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

4Fermented foods & feeding your gut🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Fermented foods contain live cultures and fermentation by-products.

How people practice it

Add a small serving of a fermented food to one or more meals a day, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi or miso.

Typical amounts / times studied

See 🟡 LI-S10: the trial worked up to about 6 servings/day.

Cautions

Watch the sodium in pickled foods. Choose unpasteurized products only if you're healthy.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

5Ultra-processed food, sugar & the 'dissonance' diet🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Ultra-processed foods (industrial formulations high in refined starch, sugar, fat, salt and additives) cause people to eat more. In a tightly controlled trial, participants ate about 500 kcal/day more (🟢 ST-UPF).

How people practice it

Swap one packaged item a day for a whole-food version. Read ingredient lists, and cook simple meals at home.

Typical amounts / times studied

WHO advises keeping free sugars under 10% of energy, ideally under 5% (🟢 ST-SUGAR).

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

6Hydration: how much water is enough🟢 Established

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Water carries nutrients, regulates temperature and supports thinking. Mild dehydration is linked to worse mood and concentration (🟢 ST-HYDCOG).

How people practice it

Drink water through the day and check your urine is pale. Eat water-rich foods.

Typical amounts / times studied

Typical total intake guidance is about 2.7 L/day for women and 3.7 L/day for men, from all drinks and food (🟢 ST-POPKIN). O'Neill's ~2–2.5 qt is in this range (🟢 BON-T2).

Cautions

Too much water at once can cause dangerously low sodium (rare, mostly in endurance events).

Check with your doctor first

People with heart failure or kidney disease, or on fluid restrictions, should follow their doctor's limit.

7Myths check: alkaline diets, 'detox', apple cider vinegar🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Myth check. 'Alkaline diets' don't change blood pH (🟢 ST-FENTON). 'Detox' products aren't needed, because the liver and kidneys do that job. Apple cider vinegar has one small weight trial (🟡 ST-ACV).

How people practice it

Eat fruit and vegetables because they're nourishing, not to 'alkalize'. If you use vinegar, add it diluted to food.

Typical amounts / times studied

The vinegar trial used 15–30 mL/day, diluted (🟡 ST-ACV).

Cautions

Undiluted vinegar erodes teeth and the esophagus.

Check with your doctor first

People with diabetes on insulin, or with gastroparesis, should check before using vinegar.

8Food as faith: Daniel's diet & Ezekiel 47:12🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Daniel 1:12 ('give us pulse to eat, and water to drink') and Ezekiel 47:12 ('the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine') frame food as a gift and a discipline.

How people practice it

Some people do a 10- or 21-day 'Daniel fast' of vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains and water, as a spiritual practice.

Cautions

This is a faith practice (🔵), not a medical treatment.

Check with your doctor first

People with diabetes, eating-disorder history, or pregnancy should check before any restricted fast.

Module 03 · lifestyle

Rhythm & rest resets: fasting, sleep, light, movement

1Meal timing & time-restricted eating🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Time-restricted eating means fitting your meals into a daily window that's aligned with daylight.

How people practice it

Finish dinner earlier, and keep a consistent overnight fast.

Typical amounts / times studied

The early TRE trial used a 6-hour window (about 8 am–2 pm) in 8 men (🟡 ST-ETRF). Many people simply use a 10–12 hour window.

Cautions

Can trigger low blood sugar on some medications. Not for people with a history of eating disorders.

Check with your doctor first

Anyone with diabetes (especially on insulin or sulfonylureas), pregnancy or breastfeeding, an eating-disorder history, or who is underweight.

2Autophagy: what fasting does (and what it doesn't)🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Autophagy is the cell's recycling system. Fasting and exercise activate it in animal studies.

How people practice it

Regular overnight fasting and exercise.

Typical amounts / times studied

No one knows the fasting length that 'triggers' autophagy in humans, so avoid claims like '16 hours = autophagy' (🟢 ST-AUTO).

Cautions

Extended water fasts over 24–48 h need medical supervision.

Check with your doctor first

Anyone considering a fast longer than 24 hours.

3Sleep: the nightly reset🟢 Established🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Sleep is the nightly reset. During deep sleep, the brain's glymphatic system clears waste (🟢 ST-SLEEP), and hormones, memory and mood are restored.

How people practice it

Keep a consistent bedtime and wake time. Get morning light, use dim lights at night, and keep the bedroom cool and dark. Cut off caffeine 8 or more hours before bed.

Typical amounts / times studied

Adults generally need 7–9 hours (sleep-medicine consensus; see 🟢 BK-WALKER).

Check with your doctor first

Anyone who snores loudly, stops breathing in sleep, or has ongoing insomnia should get evaluated for sleep apnea or receive CBT-I.

4Sunlight, vitamin D & circadian light🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Sunlight sets your circadian clock and makes vitamin D. Some data link sun exposure to lower blood pressure (🟡 ST-SUN).

How people practice it

Get 10–30 minutes of outdoor light in the morning. Get daylight breaks during the day.

Typical amounts / times studied

VITAL found vitamin D supplements didn't prevent cancer or heart disease in mostly non-deficient adults (🟢 ST-VITAL).

Cautions

Avoid sunburn and use sun protection at midday.

Check with your doctor first

People with a skin-cancer history, or on photosensitizing drugs.

5Movement & exercise🟢 Established🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Movement is one of the most established 'resets' of all: it benefits the heart, metabolism, mood and longevity.

How people practice it

Brisk walking, resistance training and stretching, with breaks from sitting.

Typical amounts / times studied

WHO recommends 150–300 min/week of moderate or 75–150 min of vigorous activity, plus muscle strengthening 2 or more days a week (🟢 ST-WHO-PA).

Cautions

Start slowly if you're inactive.

Check with your doctor first

Anyone with chest pain, heart disease, or dizziness on exertion.

6Cold & heat: showers, sauna, hydrotherapy🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Cold and heat (hydrotherapy) are traditional practices. A cold finish to a shower reduced sick-leave days in an RCT (🟡 ST-COLD), and frequent sauna use is linked to lower cardiovascular death (🟡 ST-SAUNA).

How people practice it

End your shower with 30–90 s of cold water. Use a sauna a few times a week.

Typical amounts / times studied

The trial used 30, 60 or 90 s of cold at the end of a hot shower. In the Finnish cohort, 4–7 sauna sessions a week had the strongest association.

Cautions

Cold shock can trigger arrhythmias. Sauna plus alcohol is dangerous.

Check with your doctor first

Anyone with heart disease, high blood pressure, Raynaud's or pregnancy.

7Nature & fresh air🟡 Emerging🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Time in nature is associated with better health and well-being (🟡 ST-NATURE).

How people practice it

Walks in parks, by water or in forest. Sit outside without your phone.

Typical amounts / times studied

At least 120 min/week in nature was the threshold for better self-reported health (🟡 ST-NATURE).

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

8Sabbath rest & seasons🟡 Emerging🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Sabbath: 'The sabbath was made for man' (Mark 2:27). Regular, weekly rest is a faith practice, and it's also part of the Loma Linda Blue Zone lifestyle (🟡 ST-BLUEZ).

How people practice it

Set aside one day a week with no work or screens, and spend it on worship, family, nature and rest.

Cautions

Faith practice (🔵).

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

Module 04 · mind-body

Gut–brain–vagus: the body's tuning fork

1The gut–brain axis🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

The gut–brain axis is two-way communication between your gut, its microbes and your brain, through nerves, hormones and immune signals (🟢 ST-CRYAN).

How people practice it

A fiber-rich, fermented-food diet, regular meals, and stress practices all support it.

Cautions

Probiotic 'psychobiotic' products are still emerging.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

2The vagus nerve explained (and the polyvagal debate)🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

The vagus nerve carries 'rest and digest' signals between brain, heart and gut. Polyvagal theory is a popular model, but its specific claims are disputed (🟢 ST-POLYCRIT).

How people practice it

Slow exhale-focused breathing, humming or singing, prayer and chanting, social connection, and a cold-water face splash.

Cautions

Teach it as physiology, not as a single 'reset button'.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

3Resonance breathing at 6 breaths/min🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Resonance breathing at about 6 breaths/min synchronizes heart rate and breath and maximizes heart-rate variability. It's the most direct real 'frequency reset' (🟢 ST-HRVB).

How people practice it

Sit comfortably. Inhale through the nose for about 4–5 s and exhale for about 5–6 s. Use a timer app or a HRV wearable.

Typical amounts / times studied

About 6 breaths per minute (≈0.1 Hz), for 10–20 min, once or twice a day, as used in HRV biofeedback protocols (🟢 ST-HRVB).

Cautions

People with severe lung disease, or panic disorder triggered by breath focus.

4Food & mood: the SMILES trial🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

In the SMILES trial, adults with depression who improved their diet (a Mediterranean-style pattern) alongside their usual care had greater mood improvement (🟡 ST-SMILES).

How people practice it

Work with a dietitian, if possible, to build a whole-food Mediterranean plate.

Cautions

Diet goes alongside mental-health treatment, never instead of it.

Check with your doctor first

Anyone with depression should keep their treatment team informed. In a crisis, call or text 988 in the US.

5Vagus stimulation: what research devices show🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) devices are a research field. A few devices are FDA-cleared for specific uses (🟡 ST-TAVNS).

How people practice it

Consider these only through a clinician. Breathing and humming are free alternatives.

Cautions

Avoid consumer 'vagus' gadgets with medical claims.

Check with your doctor first

Anyone with a pacemaker, heart rhythm problems or epilepsy.

Module 05 · mind-body

Emotional resonance: stress, trauma & healing emotions

1Stress biology: why zebras don't get ulcers🟢 Established

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Chronic stress keeps the body's alarm system switched on. In research it's associated with slower wound healing (🟢 ST-WOUND), more colds after virus exposure (🟢 ST-COHEN) and shorter telomeres (🟢 ST-EPEL).

How people practice it

Name your stressors. Build daily recovery with breathing, movement, prayer, sleep and connection.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

2Early adversity & the body🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to adult health risks in a dose-response way (🟢 ST-ACE). The body keeps a record of what happened.

How people practice it

Trauma-informed therapy (e.g. EMDR, trauma-focused CBT), body-based regulation, and safe relationships.

Cautions

Doing trauma work alone can be overwhelming.

Check with your doctor first

Work with a licensed trauma therapist. In a crisis, call or text 988.

3Expressive writing🟢 Established

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Expressive writing means writing about your deepest thoughts and feelings on a difficult experience (🟢 ST-PENNE).

How people practice it

Write privately, without editing.

Typical amounts / times studied

Pennebaker's protocol is 15–20 minutes a day for 3–4 consecutive days.

Cautions

You may feel worse briefly after writing. Stop if it overwhelms you.

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

4Gratitude🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Gratitude practice: in RCTs, keeping a gratitude list improved well-being modestly (🟢 ST-GRAT), and a pilot study linked it to HRV and inflammation markers (🟡 ST-GRAT-HRV). 'In every thing give thanks' (Philippians 4:6).

How people practice it

Write 3–5 things you're grateful for, or pray a gratitude prayer.

Typical amounts / times studied

The original study used weekly lists over 10 weeks (🟢 ST-GRAT).

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

5Forgiveness & letting go of anger🟡 Emerging🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Forgiveness (releasing resentment, not excusing harm) is associated with lower stress and better health (🟡 ST-FORGIVE). 'Let not the sun go down upon your wrath' (Ephesians 4:26).

How people practice it

Use prayer, a REACH-style forgiveness exercise, or a letter you don't send.

Cautions

Forgiveness doesn't mean staying in an unsafe situation.

Check with your doctor first

If you're in an abusive situation, contact a counselor or the National DV Hotline (1-800-799-7233).

6Laughter & joy🟡 Emerging🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Laughter and joy: 'A merry heart doeth good like a medicine' (Proverbs 17:22). A small study linked mirthful laughter to lower stress hormones (🟡 ST-LAUGH).

How people practice it

Comedy, play, time with friends, music and worship.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

7Connection & community🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Social connection is one of the strongest predictors of survival. A meta-analysis found strong relationships were linked to about 50% better odds of survival (🟢 ST-SOCIAL).

How people practice it

Schedule regular time with people, join a church or small group, and volunteer.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

8Emotion-energy teachings (Emotion/Heart/Body Code, Energy Codes, Hawkins): labeled🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Emotion and energy teachings, such as Bradley Nelson's Emotion Code, Body Code and Heart Code, Sue Morter's Energy Codes, and David Hawkins's 'Map of Consciousness', claim trapped emotions or energy blockages cause illness and can be released with magnets or muscle testing.

How people practice it

If you explore them, treat them as a reflective or prayerful ritual for naming and releasing emotions.

Cautions

Muscle testing and 'trapped emotion' release aren't supported by controlled studies (🔴). Hawkins's 'calibration' numbers aren't measurable.

Check with your doctor first

Don't use these in place of therapy or medical care.

9Emotional intelligence & sensitivity🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Emotional intelligence (Goleman, Bradberry) means recognizing and managing emotions in yourself and others. It's a teachable skill. Elaine Aron's 'highly sensitive person' trait has a validated questionnaire (🟡).

How people practice it

Name the emotion, pause, breathe, then choose a response. Practice empathy in conversations.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

10Nervous-system re-regulation after trauma🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Re-regulating the nervous system after trauma (e.g. Runkle's Rethinking Trauma, Wiest).

How people practice it

Grounding techniques (5-4-3-2-1 senses), safe movement, breath, routine, and trauma-informed therapy.

Check with your doctor first

A licensed trauma-informed therapist is the right guide.

Module 06 · spirit

Mind, meditation & spirit

1Meditation & prayer: what studies show🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Meditation and prayer: a review of 47 RCTs found meditation programs moderately reduce anxiety, depression and pain (🟢 ST-GOYAL). Prayer and religious practice are associated with better mental health (🟢 FA-KOENIG). 'Be still, and know that I am God' (Psalm 46:10).

How people practice it

Spend 10–20 minutes daily in centering prayer, Scripture meditation (lectio divina), or mindfulness of breath.

Typical amounts / times studied

Programs in the review typically ran about 8 weeks (🟢 ST-GOYAL).

Cautions

Intensive meditation retreats can occasionally destabilize people with a trauma or psychosis history.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

2Jung: the inner journey & synchronicity (labeled)🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Renewing the mind (Romans 12:2): beliefs and expectations shape experience. Even open-label placebos can ease symptoms (🟡 ST-KAPTCHUK). Bruce Lipton's 'biology of belief' extends this much further than the evidence supports (🔴).

How people practice it

Write down unhelpful thoughts and replace them with truths, Scripture or reasoned alternatives (a CBT-style practice). Use morning intentions.

Cautions

Belief influences symptoms, not disease outcomes. Avoid self-blame.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

3Renewing the mind: thoughts, beliefs & placebo🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Joe Dispenza teaches that meditation can rewire body and brain. His retreat study (🟡 ST-DISP) is uncontrolled, he is a co-author, and it has a correction. Sue Morter's Energy Codes are 🔴.

How people practice it

If you enjoy guided meditations, use them as relaxation and focus training.

Cautions

Claims of healing serious disease aren't supported.

Check with your doctor first

Don't skip medical treatment for retreats.

4Dispenza & Morter: what's measured, what's claimed🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Fasting as spiritual discipline: Jesus taught 'when ye fast…' (Matthew 6:16–18). Fasting is a practice of devotion. Its metabolic effects are a separate, 🟡 question.

How people practice it

A partial fast (one meal, a Daniel fast, a media fast) for prayer.

Cautions

Medical fasting cautions apply.

Check with your doctor first

People with diabetes, pregnancy, an eating-disorder history or who are underweight should ask a clinician first.

5Fasting as spiritual discipline🟢 Established🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Regular worship attendance is associated with lower mortality and depression in large cohorts (🟢 FA-CHURCH). Community, purpose and hope all play a part.

How people practice it

Join a congregation or small group, serve others, and pray with friends.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

6Faith community & health🟢 Established🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

'Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost?' (1 Corinthians 6:19). Caring for your body can be an act of worship.

How people practice it

Treat each habit in this manual as stewardship, not perfectionism.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

7Your body as a temple🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Carl Jung (Memories, Dreams, Reflections; The Red Book) explored the unconscious, archetypes and 'synchronicity'. These ideas are influential, but they can't be tested in controlled studies (🔴).

How people practice it

Use journaling and dream notes as reflection.

Cautions

Not a medical framework.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

Module 07 · teachers

Barbara O'Neill's teachings, examined

1Who she is, her books & videos, and the 2019 HCCC order🟢 Established🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Barbara O'Neill is an Australian health educator. In 2019 the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission permanently prohibited her from providing health services (🟢 BON-REG). We describe her teachings for context and label each one.

How people practice it

Read her lifestyle points alongside the evidence labels. Use only her official channel (🔴 BON-V1), because deepfake ads circulate under her name.

Cautions

Don't follow her disease protocols.

Check with your doctor first

Talk with your doctor before acting on any remedy you hear.

2The 8 laws of health (NEWSTART roots): what science supports🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Her '8 laws of health' (NEWSTART: nutrition, exercise, water, sunshine, temperance, air, rest, trust in God) come from Seventh-day Adventist health teaching (🔵 BK-WHITE). Most of the pillars match established guidance (🟢), and 'trust in divine power' is faith (🔵).

How people practice it

Use the 8 laws as a weekly checklist.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

3Hydration teachings🟢 Established

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

O'Neill teaches about 2–2.5 quarts of water a day, mostly plain water. That amount fits standard intake guidance (🟢 BON-T2, 🟢 ST-POPKIN). Her claims about special timing and 'flushing toxins' aren't supported.

How people practice it

See the Hydration lesson (Eating for resonance).

Typical amounts / times studied

About 2–2.5 qt/day (🟢 BON-T2). Needs vary.

Check with your doctor first

People on fluid restriction.

4Garden-of-Eden plant diet & temperance🟢 Established🔵 Faith

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Her 'Garden of Eden' diet (plant-forward, high fiber) fits the fiber evidence (🟢 ST-FIBER). Her stricter food-combining and no-yeast rules aren't supported.

How people practice it

Eat plants first, without rigid rules.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

5Hydrotherapy, poultices & castor oil: tradition vs. evidence🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Hydrotherapy (contrast showers, foot baths), poultices and castor oil packs. Cold finishes and sauna have 🟡 support. Poultices and castor oil 'detox' are 🔴 tradition (🟡 BON-T8, 🔴 BON-T9, 🔴 BON-T3).

How people practice it

If you enjoy these, treat them as calming rituals (see Topicals, baths & packs).

Cautions

External use only. Avoid hot treatments with neuropathy.

Check with your doctor first

Pregnancy, heart disease, or diabetes with neuropathy.

6Claims we don't make: alkaline, candida/cancer, bicarb, infant & vaccine advice🟢 Established🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Claims we don't make: alkalizing the body to fight disease, 'cancer is a fungus', bicarbonate for cancer, raw goat's milk for infants, and anti-vaccine advice. The HCCC cited these as unsafe (🔴 BON-T5, T6, T7, T12).

How people practice it

We never teach these. If you hear them, talk with your doctor.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

Module 08 · frequency

Frequency & the body: what's real, what's tradition

1Real body frequencies you can measure🟢 Established

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Real body frequencies you can measure: heart-rate variability (≈0.1 Hz resonance), gastric slow waves (≈0.05 Hz), EEG bands (0.5–100 Hz), whole-body mechanical resonance (4–8 Hz, ISO 2631), and the Earth's Schumann resonance (~7.83 Hz, a fact of physics, with no proven body 'tuning').

How people practice it

The practical 'frequency reset' with evidence is resonance breathing (see Gut–brain–vagus).

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

2Sound as a relaxation practice: vibroacoustics, bowls, binaural beats🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Sound can be a relaxation practice: vibroacoustic beds (30–120 Hz), singing bowls and binaural beats all have small or mixed studies of relaxation and mood (🟡 FQ-VAT, 🟡 FQ-BOWL, 🟡 FQ-BINAURAL).

How people practice it

Listen lying down, at a comfortable volume, for 10–30 minutes. Pair it with slow breathing or prayer.

Cautions

Keep the volume moderate. Don't listen to binaural beats while driving.

Check with your doctor first

People with epilepsy, a pacemaker or other implant, or pregnancy should ask before using strong vibration or flashing-light products.

3Medical frequency devices: PEMF, LIPUS, TTFields, photobiomodulation, 40 Hz gamma🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Medical frequency devices (PEMF bone stimulators, LIPUS, Tumor Treating Fields, photobiomodulation, 40 Hz gamma research) show what rigorous frequency evidence looks like: a specific device, setting and indication, tested in trials.

How people practice it

These are prescription or clinical tools. They're explained here, not practiced at home.

Cautions

Consumer gadgets don't share this evidence.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

4Traditional frequency charts: Manners, Nogier, Solfeggio, Cousto (labeled)🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Traditional frequency charts (the Manners organ list, Nogier zones, Solfeggio and chakra tones, Cousto's planetary octave) are 🔴: frequencies 'traditionally associated with' organs, with no measurement behind them.

How people practice it

If you use them, use them as relaxation music only (see the Organ resets).

Cautions

No tone treats an organ or a disease.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

5Claims we don't make: Rife lists, Clark zapper, MHz 'body frequency'🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Claims we don't make: Rife 'mortal oscillatory rates', the Hulda Clark zapper, and the '62–78 MHz healthy body' claim (🔴 FQ-RIFE, 🔴 FQ-CLARK, 🔴 FQ-TAINIO).

How people practice it

Be cautious of any device sold with these claims.

Check with your doctor first

If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take prescription medication, talk with your clinician before changing your routine.

Module 09 · products

Supplements & nutrition products, evidence-checked

1Food first: why supplements are 'gap fillers'🟢 Established🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Greens powders & meal shakes (AG1, Huel), sea buckthorn, MCT oil: There are few independent trials of these products as sold. They don't replace whole vegetables (fiber, 🟢 ST-FIBER). MCT oil is quickly turned into ketones, but weight-loss effects are small. B-complex vitamins: Essential and well established for correcting a deficiency (e.g. B12 in older adults, vegans, and people on metformin). There's no proven benefit in people who already get enough. Vitamin D3 (+K2) & calcium: Vitamin D is essential, and correcting a deficiency is standard care. In VITAL (2,000 IU/day), vitamin D didn't lower cancer or heart-disease rates in mostly non-deficient adults. Evidence for K2 is emerging.

How people practice it

Use as a convenience, not a substitute for plants. Whole grains, legumes, leafy greens, eggs and animal foods. Vegans need a B12 source. Sensible sun, fatty fish and fortified foods. If you supplement, ask for a blood test. NIH lists the RDA as 600–800 IU/day and the upper limit as 4,000 IU/day for adults.

Cautions

High doses of vitamins A, K and iodine can stack across products. MCT can upset the stomach. High-dose B6 over long periods can cause nerve damage. Too much causes high calcium. K2 interacts with warfarin.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

2Omega-3, sardines & heart-brain fats🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Omega-3 (fish or algae oil) & sardines: Eating fish twice a week is a well-established healthy pattern. In the 25,871-person VITAL trial, 1 g/day of marine omega-3 supplements didn't reduce major cardiovascular events or cancer overall, though there were possible benefits for heart attacks. So: eat food first, and supplements are optional.

How people practice it

Oily fish such as sardines or salmon about twice a week. Algae oil is the plant-based option.

Cautions

Higher doses can raise bleeding risk with blood thinners and atrial-fibrillation risk at high doses. Ask your clinician.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

3Vitamin D, K2, calcium & minerals🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Vitamin D3 (+K2) & calcium: Vitamin D is essential, and correcting a deficiency is standard care. In VITAL (2,000 IU/day), vitamin D didn't lower cancer or heart-disease rates in mostly non-deficient adults. Evidence for K2 is emerging. Magnesium, zinc, selenium & iodine: These are essential nutrients, and deficiency matters. Extra beyond need isn't proven to help: the SELECT trial (selenium 200 µg) didn't prevent prostate cancer, and excess selenium or iodine can harm the thyroid and other tissues. Zinc lozenges may shorten colds slightly (Cochrane 2024, low certainty).

How people practice it

Sensible sun, fatty fish and fortified foods. If you supplement, ask for a blood test. NIH lists the RDA as 600–800 IU/day and the upper limit as 4,000 IU/day for adults. Nuts, seeds, legumes, seafood and iodized salt. Choose supplements only to fill a known gap.

Cautions

Too much causes high calcium. K2 interacts with warfarin. Selenium upper limit is 400 µg/day; iodine upper limit is 1,100 µg/day (NIH ODS). Sea moss and kelp can contain excess iodine and heavy metals.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

4Eye nutrients: lutein, zeaxanthin & AREDS2🟢 Established

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Lutein/zeaxanthin (AREDS2 formula): The AREDS2 formula is evidence-based for people with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (JAMA 2013). It isn't shown to prevent AMD in people with healthy eyes.

How people practice it

Leafy greens and eggs. Use the AREDS2 formula only on an eye doctor's advice.

Cautions

The original AREDS formula's beta-carotene raises lung-cancer risk in smokers; AREDS2 replaced it.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

5'Longevity' supplements: NAD+, spermidine, urolithin, AKG🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

NAD+ boosters (NR/NMN), resveratrol, spermidine, urolithin A, Ca-AKG: Nicotinamide riboside raised blood NAD+ and was well tolerated in a small trial (Martens 2018), but there's no proven clinical benefit. Spermidine didn't improve memory in a 12-month RCT (Schwarz 2022). Urolithin A improved some muscle measures (🟡 LI-S7). The Ca-AKG 'biological age' data come from an uncontrolled company study.

How people practice it

Food-based options include fiber and polyphenols (urolithin from pomegranate and walnuts), wheat germ, aged cheese and mushrooms (spermidine).

Cautions

Expensive, with unknown long-term effects. Ask your clinician if you have cancer, since NAD+ pathways are involved in tumor metabolism.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

6Collagen, bone broth & colostrum🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Collagen peptides & bone broth: Meta-analyses of RCTs show modest improvements in skin hydration and elasticity with hydrolyzed collagen (de Miranda 2021), though many trials are industry-funded. Bone broth's collagen content is low and highly variable (Alcock 2019). Bovine colostrum: Small trials found colostrum reduced exercise-induced increases in gut permeability (Davison 2016). There's little evidence for general use.

How people practice it

Trials commonly used 2.5–10 g/day of hydrolyzed collagen for 8–12 weeks. Broth is a nourishing food, not a dependable collagen dose.

Cautions

Count it toward your protein intake. Broth can be high in sodium. Contains dairy proteins.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

7Functional mushrooms & cacao🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Functional mushrooms (lion's mane, reishi, shiitake blends; mushroom coffee): Lion's mane improved cognitive scores in a 16-week RCT of 30 adults with mild impairment, and the benefit faded after stopping (Mori 2009). Shiitake raised immune markers (🟡 LI-S15). Blends are rarely tested as sold. Cacao / cocoa flavanols: Cocoa flavanols improve blood-vessel function (🟡 LI-S5). In COSMOS (21,442 adults), 500 mg/day of flavanols didn't significantly reduce total cardiovascular events, though cardiovascular deaths fell 27% in a secondary outcome.

How people practice it

Culinary mushrooms several times a week. The trial used 3 g/day of lion's mane powder. Unsweetened cacao or 70%+ dark chocolate in small amounts.

Cautions

Reishi has been linked to rare liver injury and can interact with blood thinners. Chocolate products can contain heavy metals (lead or cadmium), so choose tested brands.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

8Probiotics vs. fermented foods🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Probiotics (e.g. VSL#3): Some strains have evidence for specific conditions (e.g. a multi-strain probiotic for pouchitis under a GI doctor). For healthy people, fermented foods (🟡 LI-S10) have stronger 'microbiome diversity' data.

How people practice it

Fermented foods daily. Take a strain-specific product for a specific purpose.

Cautions

Avoid if you're immunocompromised unless your doctor approves.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

9Calm & mood supplements, and their interactions🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Calm & mood supplements (ashwagandha, L-theanine, GABA, 5-HTP, saffron, "cortisol support"): Ashwagandha reduced perceived stress in meta-analyses of small RCTs (Alsanie 2026), but there are case series of liver injury (Philips 2023). L-theanine has small RCTs (Hidese 2019). Saffron beat placebo for depressive symptoms in small trials (Hausenblas 2013). '5-HTP + SSRIs' can cause serotonin toxicity. 'Cortisol support' blends are untested.

How people practice it

Pair with breathing, sleep and stress practices, which have stronger evidence (🟢 ST-HRVB, 🟢 ST-GOYAL).

Cautions

Don't combine with antidepressants, sedatives or thyroid medication without your doctor. Ashwagandha: stop if you notice jaundice. Avoid in pregnancy.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

10Blood sugar, circulation & black seed🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Berberine, quercetin, NAC: Berberine lowered glucose and HbA1c in meta-analyses of mostly Chinese trials (Dong 2012), with many drug interactions. NAC is a prescription antidote for acetaminophen overdose; supplement uses are still being studied. Quercetin's human evidence is limited. Nattokinase / serrapeptase: In a 3-year RCT, nattokinase didn't slow atherosclerosis progression (Hodis 2021). The evidence for serrapeptase is poor (systematic review, Bhagat 2013). Black seed oil (Nigella sativa): Meta-analyses of small trials show modest effects on lipids, glucose and blood pressure (Musazadeh 2026). Study quality is mixed.

How people practice it

Cautions

Berberine interacts with diabetes drugs (risk of low blood sugar), cyclosporine and others. Avoid in pregnancy. Bleeding risk with blood thinners, aspirin, or before surgery. May add to the effects of blood-pressure and diabetes medications.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

11Men's vitality herbs & protein🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Male-vitality herbs (tongkat ali, fadogia, shilajit, saw palmetto + pumpkin seed): Tongkat ali modestly raised testosterone in a meta-analysis of small trials (Leisegang 2022). Fadogia agrestis has only rat data, which included testicular toxicity. Shilajit has one small trial and a risk of heavy-metal contamination. Saw palmetto did no better than placebo for urinary symptoms in a Cochrane review (Tacklind 2012). Protein, BCAA & amino-acid packs: Total protein and resistance training drive muscle growth. BCAAs alone don't maximally stimulate muscle protein synthesis (Wolfe 2017).

How people practice it

Spread protein across meals. Whole-food protein comes first.

Cautions

Get prostate symptoms checked by a doctor. Contamination and adulteration are common in 'male enhancement' products. Check with your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

12Teas & homeopathic cell salts🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Herbal teas (rooibos, brain tea) & cell salts: Teas are a pleasant way to hydrate (green tea has polyphenol evidence, 🟡 LI-S3). Homeopathic cell salts are too dilute to supply minerals, and reviews find homeopathy no better than placebo (NHMRC 2015; NCCIH).

How people practice it

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

Module 10 · products

Herbs, cleanses & 'detox': what your organs already do

1Parasite & detox cleanses: the evidence and the risks🟢 Established🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Detox & 'parasite cleanse' products (wormwood/black walnut, ParaGuard, rue, artemisinin blends, Cleanse24, binders, charcoal): No controlled studies show commercial detox or parasite cleanses remove toxins or parasites (Klein & Kiat 2015; NCCIH). Your liver and kidneys clear waste. Real parasitic infections need a stool test and prescription treatment. Activated charcoal is an emergency poisoning treatment given by clinicians (Chyka 2005); taken daily it binds medications and nutrients.

How people practice it

Support your own detox organs with fiber, water, sleep, less alcohol and cruciferous vegetables (🟡 LI-S16).

Cautions

Wormwood (thujone) can cause seizures. Rue is toxic and can cause miscarriage. Artemisinin self-treatment drives antimalarial resistance. Charcoal and binders block medications. Pau d'arco has toxicity concerns. Never use these in pregnancy.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

2Fiber, psyllium & slippery elm🟢 Established

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Psyllium & soluble fiber (slippery elm): Psyllium lowers LDL cholesterol (meta-analysis, Zhu 2024) and has an FDA-authorized heart-health claim. Slippery elm has tradition but little data.

How people practice it

Start with about 1 tsp a day and increase slowly, with plenty of water.

Cautions

Separate from medications by 2 hours. Not for people with a bowel obstruction or trouble swallowing.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

3Milk thistle & liver blends🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Milk thistle / NAC liver blends: A Cochrane review found no significant effect of milk thistle on mortality or complications in alcoholic or hepatitis B/C liver disease (Rambaldi 2007). It's generally well tolerated.

How people practice it

Things that do help the liver: less alcohol and added sugar, coffee, movement and weight management.

Cautions

Ragweed allergy. May affect blood sugar.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

4Mullein, eucalyptus & steam for the airways🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Mullein, eucalyptus & steam inhalation: Mullein is a traditional remedy with lab studies only. Steam can ease nasal congestion subjectively, but Cochrane reviews find no benefit for colds. Eucalyptus oil is toxic if swallowed, especially for children.

How people practice it

Use slow nasal breathing, fresh air and hydration (🟡 ST-BREATH). See a doctor for any persistent cough.

Cautions

Scald risk from steam. Keep essential oils away from children and pets.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

5Cayenne & chlorophyll drops🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Cayenne & chlorophyll drops: Topical capsaicin is established for some nerve pain. Oral drops for circulation, and chlorophyll's 'blood-building' claims, lack trials.

How people practice it

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

Module 11 · modalities

Topicals, baths & packs

1Castor oil packs: the ritual and the evidence🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Castor oil packs: No trials exist for 'liver detox'. A small study found castor-oil packs eased constipation symptoms in elderly people (Arslan 2011, 🟡 ST-CASTOR1). Taking castor oil by mouth is a strong laxative and can trigger labor (🟢 ST-CASTOR2).

How people practice it

A traditional practice: a flannel soaked in castor oil is placed on the abdomen with gentle warmth for 30–60 min, as a restful ritual.

Cautions

External use only. Avoid in pregnancy and on broken skin. Patch-test first.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

2Salt & magnesium baths🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Salt & mineral baths (Epsom, Dead Sea, Celtic salt, magnesium soak): Warm baths relax you. Dead Sea balneotherapy has decades of clinical data for psoriasis (Harari 2024). Absorbing meaningful magnesium through the skin isn't shown (Gröber 2017, 'myth or reality').

How people practice it

Warm (not hot) baths of 15–20 min in the evening support sleep onset.

Cautions

People with diabetic neuropathy, heart conditions or pregnancy should avoid hot water.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

3Detox foot pads & ionic foot baths🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Detox foot pads, ionic foot baths & herbal patches: An objective test of an ionic footbath found no toxic elements removed from the body; the color change comes from the electrodes and water (Kennedy 2012). Foot pads darken with sweat and moisture. The FTC has acted against detox foot-pad marketers.

How people practice it

A warm foot soak is a relaxing ritual, nothing more.

Cautions

Don't use these for diabetic feet or wounds.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

4Tea tree & essential oils🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Tea tree & essential oils (topical): Topical tea tree oil reduced acne lesions in a meta-analysis (Ye 2026). Ingesting essential oils is unsafe.

How people practice it

Diluted topical use only (e.g. 5% tea tree gel in the trials).

Cautions

Can irritate skin and cause contact allergy. Toxic if swallowed. Keep away from cats.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you're pregnant or nursing, take prescription medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes, blood-pressure, thyroid or psychiatric drugs), are scheduled for surgery, or have liver, kidney or heart disease.

Module 12 · modalities

Modalities & devices: grounding, light, heat, hydrogen & more

1Grounding / earthing🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Grounding / earthing (sheets, mats, mattress cover, barefoot): The research is small, largely from one group with industry ties (Chevalier 2012 review; a 2019 pilot RCT on bodyworkers' pain). It's biologically speculative and unconfirmed. Time barefoot in nature has its own evidence (🟡 ST-NATURE).

How people practice it

Walking barefoot on grass or sand, or sitting outdoors, makes a mindful nature practice.

Cautions

Indoor grounding products connect to your outlet's ground. Check wiring and never use them during storms. Watch for foot injury.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

2Red & near-infrared light🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Red / near-infrared light therapy: Photobiomodulation has a plausible mechanism (🟡 FQ-PBM). There are small RCTs for skin wrinkles and a few FDA-cleared indications (hair loss, some pain). Results depend on wavelength and dose, and most home devices are untested.

How people practice it

Follow the device's cleared instructions. Sessions are typically a few to 20 minutes.

Cautions

Eye protection. Check with your doctor if you're on photosensitizing medications or have had skin cancer.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

3Sauna, infrared & Waon therapy🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Sauna & infrared sauna, steam: Finnish observational data link frequent sauna with lower cardiovascular death (🟡 ST-SAUNA). Small Japanese RCTs of far-infrared 'Waon' therapy in heart failure showed modest improvements (Kihara 2016). Sweat removes only trace toxins; the liver and kidneys do the clearing.

How people practice it

Typical Finnish practice: 80 °C for 5–20 min, 2–4×/week, then cool down and rehydrate.

Cautions

Avoid with alcohol, during pregnancy, with unstable heart disease, low blood pressure or fever. Ask your doctor first if you have a heart condition.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

4Hydrogen water & inhalation🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Hydrogen water & hydrogen inhalation: A 2024 systematic review found mostly small, short, heterogeneous human trials with inconsistent results ('Extra healthy or a hoax?').

How people practice it

Plain water already does the hydrating (🟢 ST-POPKIN).

Cautions

Hydrogen gas is flammable; use inhalation machines exactly as labeled. Some generators also produce chlorine or ozone.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

5Ozone devices: why we say no to breathing or drinking it🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Ozone (ozonated water cups, water ozone generator): The FDA classifies ozone as a toxic gas with no known useful medical application in specific, adjunctive or preventive therapy (21 CFR 801.415). EPA warns that ozone generators harm the lungs. Ozonated water is a sanitizer, not a health drink.

How people practice it

Cautions

Never inhale ozone. Don't run generators in occupied rooms. Use only as a surface or produce sanitizer per the label.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

6Magnets, copper, crystals & 'energy' wands🟢 Established🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Static magnets, copper & magnetic jewelry, "energy" wands (Nikken MagDuo, insoles, braces, terahertz wand, orgonite, selenite and quartz crystals): Meta-analysis of RCTs: static magnets had no significant effect on pain (Pittler 2007). A double-blind trial found neither copper bracelets nor magnetic wrist straps helped rheumatoid arthritis (Richmond 2013). Crystals and 'terahertz' wands have no controlled evidence.

How people practice it

If you enjoy crystals or similar items, use them as a prayer or meditation focus. That's a faith or personal practice, not a treatment.

Cautions

Magnets can affect pacemakers and insulin pumps. Copper can cause skin staining or irritation.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

7EMS/TENS massagers🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

EMS / TENS foot massager: A 2022 meta-analysis of 381 RCTs found moderate-certainty evidence that TENS reduces pain intensity during or right after use, compared with placebo (Johnson 2022). It's generally safe and FDA-regulated.

How people practice it

Follow the device labeling.

Cautions

Not for people with pacemakers, epilepsy, pregnancy (abdomen), or broken skin.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

8Salt lamps, water filters & pH strips🟢 Established🟡 Emerging🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Himalayan salt diffusers / lamps: There's no controlled evidence that salt lamps or diffusers change air quality or health. Clinical halotherapy (salt-room inhalation) has only small, low-quality studies. Water filters & pH strips: Certified filters (NSF/ANSI standards) reduce specific contaminants; check the certification for the contaminant you care about. Urine pH reflects diet and kidney work, not blood pH, which the body holds at 7.35–7.45 (🟢 ST-FENTON).

How people practice it

Ventilation and a HEPA filter are the evidence-based options for indoor air. Test your local water report. Filters are worth using; pH strips aren't a health gauge.

Cautions

Salt lamps are toxic to pets if licked. Change filter cartridges on schedule.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

9Wearables & pulse oximeters: measuring your resonance🟢 Established🟡 Emerging

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Wearables & home monitors (Whoop, pulse oximeter): Validation studies show wearables estimate heart rate well, HRV moderately well and sleep stages less well (Miller 2022). FDA notes over-the-counter pulse oximeters aren't FDA-reviewed and can be less accurate on darker skin, with poor circulation, or with nail polish.

How people practice it

Use HRV trends to see the effects of resonance breathing, sleep and alcohol. That's the 'measured resonance' idea in practice.

Cautions

Don't make medical decisions from consumer devices. Seek care for shortness of breath or bluish lips regardless of the reading.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

10EMF shielding🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

EMF shielding (faraday mask, etc.): WHO and the National Cancer Institute find no established health effects from everyday radiofrequency exposure below international limits. Shielding products aren't needed, and some make phones transmit harder.

How people practice it

If you want less screen time and better sleep, keep the phone out of the bedroom. That's a real sleep-hygiene habit.

Check with your doctor first

Check with a doctor first if you have a pacemaker or other implant, epilepsy, heart disease, impaired sensation (e.g. diabetic neuropathy), are pregnant, or are treating a diagnosed condition.

Module 13 · safety

2Drinking 'food-grade' hydrogen peroxide🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Drinking "food-grade" 12–35% hydrogen peroxide: DANGER. Swallowing concentrated hydrogen peroxide causes caustic burns and oxygen gas embolism (stroke-like events, portal venous gas). It isn't an oxygen supplement. 'Food grade' only means it's free of stabilizers for industrial food processing.

How people practice it

Not recommended. Do not use. We list this only so you can recognize it.

Cautions

Never drink it. Store it away from children. If swallowed, call 1-800-222-1222 or 911.

Check with your doctor first

If you or someone else has swallowed or inhaled one of these, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (US) or 911 for severe symptoms.

3Veterinary ivermectin & fenbendazole🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Veterinary ivermectin & Duramectin paste: DANGER. The FDA warns that animal ivermectin products are concentrated for large animals and can cause overdose: vomiting, low blood pressure, seizures, coma and death. Poison centers saw surges in veterinary-product toxicity (Hoang 2022). Human ivermectin is a prescription drug for specific parasitic infections only. Dog fenbendazole (Panacur) for humans: Not approved for humans, with no clinical trials in people with cancer. A 2024 review found only case reports (Anticancer Res). Liver injury and cholestasis have been reported (Norwegian case report, 2025). Using it can delay effective cancer care.

How people practice it

Not recommended. Do not use. We list this only so you can recognize it.

Cautions

Never take veterinary products. For any suspected parasite, see a clinician for testing and prescription treatment. Never take veterinary products. If you have cancer, talk to your oncologist about any supplement.

Check with your doctor first

If you or someone else has swallowed or inhaled one of these, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (US) or 911 for severe symptoms.

4Self-dosed methylene blue🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

What it is

Methylene blue (self-dosed): Methylene blue is a prescription drug (Provayblue) for methemoglobinemia. The FDA label warns of serious, sometimes fatal serotonin syndrome with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs and some opioids, plus hemolysis in people with G6PD deficiency, and it interferes with pulse-oximeter readings. Self-dosed products vary in purity (non-pharmaceutical grades can contain heavy metals).

How people practice it

Not recommended. Do not use. We list this only so you can recognize it.

Cautions

Don't self-dose. It's absolutely dangerous with antidepressants. Use it only under a prescriber.

Check with your doctor first

If you or someone else has swallowed or inhaled one of these, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (US) or 911 for severe symptoms.

5Ozone inhalation & ingestion🔴 Traditional

3Traditionally associated frequencies (labeled 🔴, relaxation-only framing)🔴 Traditional

Educational only. Use alongside, never instead of, medical care.

Frequencies listed as "traditionally associated" with an organ come from wellness traditions, not scientific measurement 🔴. We don't claim that any frequency cures, treats, or eliminates any disease or pathogen. Listening is offered only as a relaxation practice. Avoid strong vibration or flashing-light products if you have epilepsy, a pacemaker or other implant, or are pregnant, unless your doctor approves.

What it is

🔴 Traditionally associated with the brain & nervous system in wellness charts: the Manners list gives Brain 315.8 Hz (E♭); the Nogier zone is G 146 Hz (cortex); F 73 Hz (subcortical: hypothalamus/thalamus); E 36.5 Hz (spinal cord); Solfeggio/chakra charts give 852 Hz (third eye) and 963 Hz (crown), popular chakra charts. Schumann 7.83 Hz is often said to 'ground' the brain (geophysics is real, but this claim isn't supported).

How people practice it

If you enjoy these tones, use them only as a relaxation practice: comfortable volume, lying down, paired with slow breathing or prayer.

Cautions

These values don't come from measurement, and no tone treats an organ or disease.
